The Slight Edge
When it's time for the new year to arrive, many of us make resolutions to better our lives in some way or the other. It is common to hear proclamations like, “I'm gonna quit smoking immediately,” or “I'm going to become a fully qualified CPA this year,” etc. But almost everybody fails to honor his or her commitments. Another year goes by and we remain the same. The problem is we set lofty goals or don't define our goals clearly. We don't apply the slight edge philosophy, costing us our success at the desired endeavor.
It is possible to accomplish all that we want and more, provided we make small but continual adjustments in life. Listen to Jeff Olson speak on this subject in the audio book “The Slight Edge”. How to improve the quality of life, how to achieve more at work in less time, how to save costs and earn big profits in business, how to find more time for family and friends, how to improve relationships, etc. are some of the topics covered in this book.
The great thing is that the adjustments required are small. They are so small that you might think they are insignificant to what you want to eventually achieve. You may not get results on a day to day basis, but at the end of a certain period of time, they will have produced phenomenal results.
If the slight edge philosophy is to work for you, the most important quality you need to have is discipline. If the minuscule adjustments are to add up cumulatively to produce unprecedented results, they need to be implemented daily. To get an idea of how this philosophy works, think of how it is used negatively by most people. If you eat foods full of saturated fats every day, you may not notice the results immediately, but in a year or so you'll find a spare tire around your waist.
The slight edge philosophy ensures that the changes you need to make in your life are not taxing. It doesn't require you to drastically change the way you live your daily life. All that may be required is a little addition to what you already do.
For example, instead of just going out and doing whatever you come across first, you will be asked to plan out your activities. Simple things like waking up an hour early to study/work, adding a few minutes to your workout every day if you want to burn the lard, etc. are some of the things you'll be asked to do.
When done daily, these little changes will yield amazing results in the long run. These are the things that lie between success and failure, prosperity and bankruptcy, a successful marriage and a divorce, and so on.
Such little baby steps are easy to monitor and to track the status of your journey. They make it easy to identify successes and failures, and accordingly make the necessary changes. They let you know what needs to be done in order to get closer to your goals.
The slight edge philosophy is all about gradual change to help achieve your target in a timely fashion. The adjustments are a process, and not one-time events. The more consistently we do things, the better we get at them and progress solidly to our destination.
